BBQ Price Index

I thought it would be interesting to post a survey today in the spirit of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes on a monthly basis.

The survey will derive the monthly "BBQ Price Index" and I will post it on a monthly basis going forward to help indicate whether the overall trend of consuming, preparing and selling bbq is rising or falling each month.

Please replay by e-mail or via the comments button below to participate in the survey. My replies are in red below.

1. What is the price per pound of a an untrimmed CAB brisket in the town where you live?

$3.30

2. What is the price per pound of a pork butt or shoulder in the town where you live?

$1.05 (pork butt)

3. What did you spend on the last bbq meal you purchased in a restaurant?

$23 including tip (for 2 adults)

4. How many opened bottles of bbq sauce do you currently have in your refrigerator?

9 bottles/jars as of last Saturday before we threw out 4 of them, 5 currently

5. How many bottles of opened bbq spice rub do you currently have in your cupboard?

8 bottles, and in a couple of instances there are 2 of the same kind opened

My own personal BBQ Price Index: 40.35

I look forward to your responses to the survey.

U.S. BBQ Index - Updated!

I am not sure whether I'm the first to coin the term "U.S. Barbecue Index", but I've been tracking some bbq stocks for the past few years. Click here to read some of the other posts.

The column on the left represents the original price in November 2005, when I started tracking them. The column on the right represents the recent price on April 11, 2008

U.S. Barbecue Index
Archer Daniels Midland................$ 24.52, current = $34.47
Clorox Company............................$ 54.29, current = $55.04

After being up 24% earlier this year this list of stocks is now down 6% since I started tracking them. I guess bbq isn't immune to changes in the overall economy after all.

U.S. Barbecue Index

Famous Dave's of America and it's franchisees operate 145 bbq restaurants in 35 states.

It appears that Famous Dave's barbecue concept has been generating hefty returns for investors with the stock price soaring from $13 to nearly $22 in the last 12-months. An investment in 100 shares of DAVE for $1,300 in June of 2006 would be valued at $2,100 now in June of 2007. That's a return of more than 60% in the last year.

Here's the complete list of bbq stocks that I wrote about in a bbq blog post last year.

U.S. Barbecue Index

Archer Daniels Midland................$ 24.52, current = $34.47

Only two of the stocks out of the twelve declined. The index generated a 39% total return in 18-months. The BBQ Guy's U.S. Barbecue Index is currently growing at a 24% annual rate!

Saturday, November 26, 2005

I'm adding a new feature to my bbq web site this week: "The BBQ Guy's U.S. Barbecue Stock Index".

This stock index was contrived by TheBBQGuy.com to formulate a methodology for tracking the overall health of the barbecue hobby comprised of industries and companies that have a direct impact on the recreational back-yard barbecue cook, barbecue restauranteurs, and serious competition barbecue cooks.

TheBBQGuy.com has taken a seat-of-the-pants approach to researching the twelve stocks that comprise the "The BBQ Guy's U.S. Barbecue Stock Index" based on years of experience in preparing barbecue, eating barbecue and researching the viability of the barbecue industry. Based on this highly unscientific research, the following stocks have been identified as significant indicators of the barbecue industry as a whole.
