Big Texan Steak Ranch - 72 ounce steak

We were in Amarillo in June and stopped by the Big Texan for supper. I find it hard to believe, but our waitress said 1 out every 6 people that attempt to eat the 72 ounce free steak actually succeed. The day before we were there, several people accomplished it including one from Kissimme, FL.
The steak was better than I expected. Not as good as my own personal "budget" steak restaurant favorite - Demo's in Murfreesboro, TN, but still good. They really know how to feed large numbers of people. However, I feel for the waiters and waitress that have to take care of the guests seated upstairs.

Here's a view from our grill side table.
Besides The Cadillac Ranch, this restaurant has got to be the most popular tourist attraction in the area. (Palo Duro Canyon was my favorite.)

What's different about the upstairs? Just hotter and smokey?

The wait staff has to carry big, heavy platters of food up forty or fifty stair steps.

I saw one girl carry a platter with eight plates of food on it. She held it over her head and walked up the stairs. I'm twice her size and I'm not sure I could have done it.

Talk about hard work.

Wow! I didn't think about the stairs. I guess that's their "company fitness program".

If I ever stop by there I'll have to sit downstairs because upstairs I'd feel guilted into a 40% tip!

Hahahaha. This place is classic. They start advertising it on the interstate in about Memphis.

My buddy and I swore we would do the Ol' 96er, or whatever it's called, but we wimped out when we got there. I think it was the fact that you have to do it on a stage in front of the whole restaurant. I don't like to put my gluttony on display.
