New York City BBQ
My niece just started a 2-month internship at the Good Morning America television program in NYC.
She has graciously agreed to provide some guest blog posts regarding her experiences with NYC BBQ from the perspective of southerner that's eaten Tennessee bbq for going on 20 years now.
I am not sure how many NYC readers we have here on the BBQ Blog, but if there are any out there, my niece is looking for some suggestions regarding bbq restaurants she should check out while in the Big Apple.
And she is really getting excited about the Big Apple Barbecue party this weekend. Stay tuned for pictures!
Restaurant suggestions so far:
Blue Smoke
R.U.B.
Dinasaur Bar-B-Que
Virgil's Real Barbecue
She should check out Blue Smoke. http://www.bluesmoke.com/blue/secondary/about.html
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit pricey (what in NY isn't?), but Danny Meyer, the owner (who also owns several other highly-rated NY restaurants) knows his BBQ. He spent a great deal of time traveling around the country researching various styles before opening the restaurant.
He has several styles on the menu: St. Louis, KC, Memphis, Texas, fairly accurately rendered.
He's been a judge at Memphis in May.
Brian,
ReplyDeleteHave your niece check out Paul Kirk's new restaraunt, it is called R.U.B. for Righteous Urban Barbecue. It's in New York City that's all I can tell you regarding location.
I hear the food is good but a little pricey.
Bruce
Look forward to seeing you and linda at Cabela's and Grnad Rapids.
Hi Bruce,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion. I'm making a list of places for her to visit.
We'll be in Dundee and Grand Rapids. See you there.
Are you going to be competing?
EE,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the NYC restaurant suggestion. I've added it to the list of venues for her to check out.
She should definitely do Blue Smoke - it's a NYC spin on a BBQ place. RUB is good, tho everything has the same flavor pallette. Daisy May's is pretty consistent and usually pretty good. Don't forget the Waterfront Ale Houses and Spankys.
ReplyDeleteWhatever she does, tell her to stay away from Dallas BBQ. It's got some tasty and really cheap food, but it's not BBQ by any stretch of the imagination.
Of course, if she's feeling homesick and wants some home made Q, tell her to hop the train to Sheepshead Bay. I'll cook for her any day.
My niece Ashley is getting settled into her internship in the Big Apple.
ReplyDeleteI received this e-mail from her tonight:
"Dear BBQ Guy,
We found one BBQ place last night called Virgil’s BBQ. It is off 44th and Broadway (don’t I sound like a little New Yorker) in Times Square. I was just wondering if you had ever heard of it, I didn’t notice it on the blog. Oh and by the way, I am recruiting quite a crowd to go to the Big Apple BBQ.
Your favorite BBQ Correspondent,
Ashley
